Day 1: The Basic Needs of Plants
Objectives
Students will...
- Recognize that the basic needs of a plant are air, light, water, space to grow, and nutrients
Materials
For this activity, you will need soil, seeds, a small lamps, small plastic cups, and water
Events of Instruction
- Students will anticipate what plants need to grow by discussing what THEY need in order to grow
- Class will watch the demonstration on plant growth and the basic needs of plants
- In groups of five, students will plant seeds that will be grown under five different conditions: without light, without water, without soil, without room to grow, and one with all the needs met (the control group).
- Students will observe and log the seeds growth everyday through the unit

Assessment
Students will be responsible for completing a diary log of their observations of the seeds' growth every day of the 10 day unit. This log will show whether or not they understand how the various needs affects the growth of a plant.
