Day 7: Physical Characteristics of Animals

Identify simple physical characteristics of animals, including body coverings, body shape, and appendages
Describe multiple types of body coverings, body shapes, and appendages
Materials
- National Geographic Magazines, or any other student appropriate magazine that has pictures of animals
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
Events of Instruction
- Watch short video on animal body coverings
- Discuss why animals must have certain coverings
- Introduce the concept of appendages by using arms, legs, feet, etc. as examples
- Discuss why certain animals are small, while others are big, and why some animals are skinny, while others are not
- Cut out pictures from magazines and paste them to construction paper to make a collage of animals. Label and identify the body coverings, appendages, and body shape of each animal.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on how accurately they label the animals in their collages.

Here is a picture of a foldable students can make on the physical characteristics of animals. You can make this foldable by folding the four corners of the paper into the middle. From here, draw a picture of the animal on the inside and write the animals characteristics o the flaps.
