Day 9: Classify Animals by their Characteristics
Objectives
Students will...
- Classify animals by their physical characteristics
Materials
- Pictures of animals that are tied to a piece of string (these pictures will be hanging around the students necks)
Events of Instruction
- Students will observe the physical characteristics of the animal that is on their animal necklace
- From here, they will write down all of the physical characteristics that they see
- Next, the students will get up and try to find other animals that have the same characteristics as their animals
- Once students are in the right groups, each group will present to the class why they can be classified together.
Ideas for Differentiation
If this activity is not challenging enough for some students, provide them with information and texts about phylum's and animal kingdoms. Encourage them to classify there animals according to these restrictions as well.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on the presentation that they give at the end of the lesson.

The link below will direct you to a page for an animal classification activity. If students do not want to complete the entire activity, they can still use the completed chart as a resource:
Animal Classification Foldable:
Here is a link to a foldable that can be used for animal classification. Instead of having clouds on the foldable, have three different animals. Here are the instructions:
1) Choose three animals that can be classified together
2) Fold a piece of paper in half horizontally
3) Cut two slits on half of the paper (only on one of the flaps!)
4) Draw or paste a picture of each animal, and write the name of the animal below
5) Write the similarities they have on the inside of the foldable (Why are they classified together?)
Repeat these step for different classifications!
